Om forfatteren
Anbefalinger Dr. Walter J. Hollenweger God’s Showman is a first-class analysis of one of the early Pentecostal missionaries to South Africa, the Canadian born John G. Lake. I am deeply thankful for this thought-provoking book. Because of its high intellectual qualities and the excellent backing-up with sources this book raises a number of important theological questions with which contemporary Pentecostalism has to wrestle. Dr. Allan Anderson This is a substantial and original work on one of the pioneers of Pentecostalism in South Africa and the USA, John Graham Lake. This book contributes considerably more knowledge of this enigmatic and controversial figure than has previously been known. It is arranged in chronological sequence, beginning with Lake's early, pre-Pentecostal life, his years in South Africa, and his later ministry in the USA, concluding with an assessment of his contribution. An extensive analytical commentary permeates the entire book, a forceful, thoroughly scrutinized and exhaustive study, with copious and comprehensive endnotes often as interesting as the main thesis. The author has left few stones unturned, with substantial analysis of original documents and archival sources, giving minute attention to detail. Readers will find this fascinating study of one of the pioneers of early Pentecostalism well worth the effort. Dr. Stanley M. Burgess This is the first comprehensive academic biography
of John Graham Lake, a Wesleyan Methodist minister turned Pentecostal,
who in early twentieth century America served as a link between John Dowie's
Zionism and William Seymour's enthusiastic Black liturgy and African-American
egalitarianism. Subsequently, as a missionary in South Africa he helped
to found the Apostolic Faith Mission which then experienced a renewal
similar to that of Azusa Street. In turn, this impacted indigenous African
churches. This biography presents multiple perspectives on Lake, ranging
from those who claim that Lake was a saintly charismatic missionary, to
those who insist that he was an Elmer Gantry charlatan. |
